Troyer: I got a chance to work with John Lennon when I sang on his song, “Woman.” As a child of the Beatles and idolizing them growing up it was such an honor to work with John and hang out with him for a few days. “Holding Out for a Hero” was another fun song to work on.Įric, of all the highlights of your career as a session artist, what stands out to you as most memorable? “Total Eclipse of The Heart” had a ton of vocals but we knew it was an important piece of music. I remember when I was singing on “Uptown Girl” I thought this is pretty darn catchy. Troyer: To have a hit a lot of things have to fall into place, but sometimes you have a sense if it’s going to be a great song. You had to be adaptable, get in, get out and make something great.Īt the time you were recording some of those songs did you know they were going to be special? Troyer: As a session artist, what you learned to do very quickly was assess the situation and come up with parts that contribute to the success of the track. He was usually still writing as he was recording so you really couldn’t get an idea about the song until it was completely finished.Įric, you’ve worked for years as a session artist. Kaminski: The strings always went on at the end and Jeff never did vocals until just about everything else was finished. Mik, what was the recording process like for ELO back in the early days? We always get a good reaction and the audience is usually on their feet when we finish. Blue Sky” really is fun to do and I also love “All Over The World.” But the one I probably like to perform most is “Turn To Stone.” It’s a powerful tune and it’s great fun to sing. It’s a happy, good-feeling song that everyone sings along with. Blue Sky” because it always gets fantastic reception. One day there was an advert in Melody Maker saying, “ELO requiring violinist.” I didn’t really know much about ELO, having only heard “Roll Over Beethoven,” but my friends kept saying why don’t you have a go and apply for it. Kaminski: I was in London playing shows and gigging with different bands. Mik, how did you become involved in the original lineup of ELO? We’re honored to continue to play this great music. We carried on until Bev decided to retire around the year 2000 and then we carried on as The Orchestra. He put together ELO II with me and several of the members of ELO. Troyer: Once ELO folded up in the mid-80s Bev Bevan wanted to continue the band and play live. Jeff Lynne’s writing was, and still is, brilliant. Kaminski: Every time you walk into a supermarket there’s an ELO tune playing. We have a lot of young people coming out to see us. It carries the torch and becomes familiar to other generations. These songs are still used in movies and many other things. Troyer: It’s classic rock, a high point of the rock and roll era that speaks to everybody. What do you think makes the music of ELO so timeless and special? It’s an engaging and exciting show to watch. Mik was in the original ELO lineup and I’ve been doing it since the ELO II days that started in 1988. Eric Troyer: We’ve been touring all around the world playing the songs the way they were written and recorded by Electric Light Orchestra.
